Santa Maria d'Alguaire

Did you know that there were women's communities in the military orders? There were! And a very interesting community -- Santa Maria d'Alguaire in Catalonia -- is currently under excavation. TeamNun is partnering with lead archaeologist Maria Soler-Sala at the University of Barcelona to study the human remains that have been excavated.
The remains of one of SM Alguair's prioresses - Jerònima (d. ) -- are so well preserved that it has been possible to restore the veil that was discovered intact in her grave. You can read about the discovery here!
TeamNun will be studying ten sets of human remains excavated from the site, conducting dental calculus and stable isotope analysis -- with the potential to add significantly to our understanding of Jerònima's life and religious practices.
